" Question: domain & hosting security
Hi All, What all things should be considered if one registering any new domain & taking hosting plan through third party, what all things I should check about the company, and what type of documents should I prepare to secure my complete ownership of domain and the data hosted on third party server ? That is actually a very good question, and quite a few of our clients ask this. First part is domain name, I would say this is much easier choice since there are a lot of companies (GoDaddy, Netfirms, 1and1 and many more...), they all offer pretty much same service for the same price, so what I would recommend is finding hosting company first and purchasing domain name at the same place, so you will have single access to domain management and your hosting.
For the hosting you should consider quite a few things like: what kind of website you are going to develop (static html or dynamic). If you need dynamic, you should figure out do you need Windows (for .NET) or Linux (for PHP, Perl...), or you might need a hosting that support Java. Then you should figure out what kind of database you should use. Based on this variables, choice of companies you will consider will narrow down. Web development needs should dictate hosting specifications.
And now coming back to your question regarding security and documents. First of all in order to protect your name you need to register trademark, and this should be addressed to the lawyer (you don't have to wait for this to register a domain name) And this will secure your domain name ownership. For the hosting, read Terms and Conditions of the company that you consider to make sure there is nothing suspicious that might harm you in a long run. In general it is much safer to get your own server for the hosting if you really consigned with security issues, since you will have to setup all security on your server and you will have full control.
Al this is good, but this is going to be costly, so if you are just starting up, you can simply register domain name and hosting with one of biggest companies and establish your online appearance, and once your business starts picking up, hire a lawyer that will assist you with all legalities.
